STRUCTURE

The Accident & Medical Care Course prepares candidates for AMPEX, an examination which is part of the accreditation requirement for Accident and Medical practice, a Vocational Scope of Medicine.

The Course covers urgent medical conditions seen in Accident and Medical Clinics.

 

AIMS OF THE COURSE

1. To introduce doctors to basic knowledge, skills and attitudes of Accident and Medical Practice, sufficient to allow safe practice in a supervised setting.

2. To provide reference material for self-directed learning.

3. To emphasis certain attitudes:

i) Recognition of one’s limitations.

ii) Knowing when to call for help.

iii) To question current practice in the light of latest knowledge.

FORMAT OF THE COURSE

> 40 lectures (approximately 10 of lecture notes, background articles and 76 hours of lectures on DVD) all via distance learning.

> Weekend practical courses - ACLS (16 hours) & practical skills workshop weekend. These weekend sessions are held in Auckland.

> Lecture review questionnaire.

ASSESSMENT

(i) Course Modules

After viewing the required DVDs and reading the resource material for each module, answer a series of questions and write a case study

(ii) AMPA Certificate

Participants are eligible for an AMPA Certificate when they have successfully completed:

> The questions and case studies

> The practical skills weekend

> A 16 hour ACLS course.

(iii) AMPEX

AMPEX is administered by AMPA. The Part I exam will be based on the DVDs, folders, practical skills weekend and the ACLS course. The exam will be held in November and consists of an OSCE and written paper.

Please note there is a separate fee of $843.75 including GST to sit AMPEX. This fee includes AMPA membership if wanted.

March to November 2010

FEES

$4,500 including GST.

PROGRAMME ADMISSION

A candidate must have completed at least one year post full registration. Preference will be given to Accident & Medical training programme members.

CME POINTS AMPA

> Full year including completion of case studies and short answersquestions - 20pts.

> ACLS weekend - 25 pts.

> Practical skills weekend - 25 pts.

> AMPEX Exam - successful completion - 20 pts.

CME POINTS RNZCGP

For Accreditation and MOPS purposes, this course is worth 40 educational hours.
