History

  • Formed in 1992 by doctors working in hospital emergency departments and community clinics. 
  • Became an incorporated society in 1995
  • Medical Council recognition as a branch of medicine in 2000.

Membership

  • Consists of doctors who work in community Clinics and hospital Emergency Departments.
  • Approximately 170 members, 30% hospital / 70% community.

Goals

  • To advance the delivery of quality patient care.
  • To represent its members to statutory bodies, government, the media and other entities.
  • To foster research in Accident and Medical care.

Activities

Vocational Registration

Administration of the four-year post-graduate Accident and Medical training programme culminating in Fellowship of AMPA.

Administration of the recertification programme, to ensure ongoing competence of Accident and Medical practitioners after attaining Fellowship.

Regional Health Authorities / Ministry of Health

AMPA has initiated discussions regarding the following issues:

  • Free medical care for children aged 5 and under.
  • Practice nurse subsidy criteria.
  • Communication with Public Hospitals.

NZMA

AMPA is affiliated with the NZMA.

AMPA is an incorporated society, governed by rules and regulations.
