Overview of AMPEX

*It is strongly recommended to formally join the training programme before enrolling for AMPEX or the A&M Care course.

The AMPEX examination is set by AMPA's Board of Censors, and is held in November. The examination comprises a two hour written true / false and short answer question paper, and an OSCE (objective structured clinical examination).

Doctors may sit the AMPEX examination without attending the Accident and Medical Care Course. They do not need to be enrolled in the AMPA training programme. If places for the exam are limited, priority will be given to AMPA trainees.

AMPEX is held each year in November.

Composition

AMPA established the Accident and Medical Care course in 1999. It prepares students for AMPEX, AMPA's primary examination, leading to vocational registration in the Branch of Accident & Medical Practice.

It is a one-year part time course comprising forty weeks of approximately two and a half hour weekly sessions, plus a 16-hour ACLS weekend course and practical skills weekend.

The goal of the course is to prepare doctors for safe practice in an Accident and Medical environment,  i.e. to:

  1. Recognise, assess and provide initial management of acute conditions to a level of competence sufficient for safe independent practice in an A&M environment.

  2. Demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitude to provide the full range of A&M services.

Entry Requirement

The Applicant must be a registered medical practitioner and have at least one postgraduate year of medical experience.

Process

The course requires active participation in the organisation and conduct of the weekly sessions.  Students  will be expected to contribute to case scenarios and analysis of case scenarios raised by the group and course facilitators.

It is expected that the participants will devote an amount of weekly study time at least equal to the length of the sessions.

AMPA  recognition

AMPA will provide a certificate of completion to participants who have attended at least 80% of each module and have completed all internal assessment.

Distance learning

The Accident and Medical Care Course is predominantly taught by distance learning.
